BEM Career Pathways

A student-facing exploration and job-search planning guide for BEM students. Use this site to learn what BEM graduates commonly do, compare possible pathways, test your interests, and build a stronger internship and full-time search over time. You do not have to pick one path and be done; the goal is to use the information here to make better decisions as your interests, coursework, internship evidence, and conversations with alumni and employers develop.

551BEM outcomes by function / industry, FDS 2018-2025
323reported accepted job titles

Start here: how to navigate this Career Pathways site for maximum results
Use this page as a practical navigation map. The site works best when you move from outcome evidence, to pathway comparison, to employer and role research, to skill-building, and finally to a specific job-search plan you can discuss with your Career Coach.
Recommended student workflow

BEM Career Pathways navigation map

Do not treat the site as a one-time reading assignment. Work through it in a sequence: learn where students land, compare paths, identify employers and job titles, build evidence, and convert what you learn into a focused search plan.

Best use Complete one pass before a coaching appointment, then return to specific sections as your goals become clearer.
First pass: learn the market

Start with Employment by Function and outcome trends. Ask: Which functions appear most often? Which pathways match my interests and concentration? Which options create questions I should bring to my coach?

Second pass: research targets

Move from broad interest to specific employers and job-title families. Use the site to build a starter list, then validate current openings in 12Twenty, Handshake, LinkedIn, Wake Network, and employer career sites.

Third pass: build evidence

Identify the skills your target roles require and connect those skills to class projects, experiential work, certifications, student leadership, internships, and independent practice.

Final pass: execute

Use your target role, employer list, priority skills, and evidence to create a job-search plan and story you can use in applications, outreach, interviews, and coaching conversations.

Before you meet with your Career Coach, bring as many of these four components as possible
1. One or two pathways you are exploring 2. Five to ten employers to research 3. Three job titles or role families to search 4. Two priority skills you can prove with evidence
Did this create more questions than answers? That is the point of Start Here. Use the map to identify what you need to learn next, then meet with your Career Coach to turn questions into a search strategy.
Employment by Function
Functional areas of the jobs BEM graduates accepted (2018–2025), using Outcomes Data. Use this data to see where prior BEM students have landed and to generate questions about fit; the largest categories are starting points for exploration, not limits on your search.

Career pathway profiles
Explore these highlighted BEM pathways as starting points for learning and comparison. They are based on common historical outcomes, but they are not a fixed menu of only eight acceptable choices. Remember, you will want to compare this outcomes data with current market insights. What was popular 3 years ago may have shifted this cycle.

Exploration note: You are not choosing a permanent identity from this list. These pathways reflect common BEM outcomes and give you language for research, applications, and coaching conversations. It is normal to compare more than one before you narrow.

Did this create more questions than answers? That's okay! Meet with your Career Coach to talk through what you are learning, compare possible pathways, and choose the next step for your search.
Job Search Plan
Build a customized BEM search plan by choosing a career pathway or job title / role group you want to explore, selecting a related skill, and connecting that skill to actual BEM curriculum evidence. You can revise your choices as you learn more. Then choose the search track you are running: junior-summer internship or senior full-time job.

Customize your BEM Job Search Plan

Start with a pathway or role group you want to understand better. Then choose a priority skill and turn BEM courses, concentration choices, BEM 389 internship work, leadership experiences, and portfolio evidence into a search plan you can discuss with your Career Coach.

Step 1 — Begin with a pathway or job title / role group
Open Skill Builder
Step 3 is available now. Choose a target above and a skill below to customize the Job Search Plan and curriculum evidence. You can change your choices as you explore. Until then, use the internship and full-time timing tracks underneath as your baseline BEM search system.
Step 2 — Choose a priority skill related to that target
Select a Step 1 target to see skill choices.
If the skill you want to build is not listed: use the built-in skills as examples, not limits. Name the skill, upload syllabi for courses you are taking or considering, and ask an AI tool to map that skill to BEM coursework, assignments, projects, internship evidence, university resources, student organizations, employer events, LinkedIn Learning, certifications, volunteer/work experiences, and portfolio artifacts. Then meet with your Career Coach to decide which evidence is strongest for your target role.AI prompt to try: I am a BEM student exploring [target role or pathway]. I want to develop [skill]. Using the syllabi and course materials I upload, suggest ways I can build this skill through curricular evidence, university resources and activities, non-university resources, projects, and portfolio artifacts. Also suggest how I could explain the skill on my resume, LinkedIn profile, and in interviews.
Search direction
Select a pathway or role group
This panel will translate your selection into search keywords, employer targets, weekly actions, and networking prompts.
Step 3 · BEM curriculum evidence
Connect coursework to proof
After Step 1 and Step 2, this area will show the actual BEM courses, concentration options, BEM 389 internship evidence, and portfolio artifacts that support the selected skill.
Timing tracks for the BEM search
BEM students run two connected searches. Use the customized target and skill plan above, then choose the track below that matches where you are in the undergraduate timeline.
Search 1 · Junior-summer internship
Secure a meaningful internship that satisfies BEM 389, gives you supervisor feedback, and creates the evidence you will use in senior-year recruiting.
Search 2 · Senior full-time job
Convert internship deliverables, concentration choices, BEM coursework, leadership experiences, and alumni networking into a focused full-time offer strategy.
Junior-summer internship search. Your internship is not just a requirement — it is the evidence engine for the full-time search. Treat the internship search like a role-family experiment: explore several common BEM outcomes, test one primary pathway and one adjacent pathway, and prioritize roles that will produce deliverables you can explain in interviews.
Goal: enter junior fall with a clear internship direction, not a blank search.
  • Test one primary pathway and one adjacent pathway. Use BEM outcomes, concentrations, and job title cards to decide which directions you want to explore through research, networking, and applications.
  • Translate BEM 211, BEM 221, BEM 202, and BEM 287 into early search language. Build a resume that shows teamwork, customer insight, quantitative thinking, and professional readiness.
  • Create a 30-employer seed list. Include BEM historical employers, local/regional employers, family/personal-network leads, Wake alumni employers, Handshake postings, and companies aligned with your concentration.
Goal: build a real internship pipeline before spring pressure peaks.
  • Submit 5-8 targeted applications weekly. Prioritize roles that will produce analytical, client-facing, operational, financial, or marketing deliverables you can show later.
  • Send 5-7 outreach messages weekly. Use Wake Network, WFU LinkedIn alumni, WFUSB LinkedIn alumni, employer events, and previous interns to learn role expectations and timing.
  • Ask evidence-based questions. Ask what projects interns own, what tools they use, how feedback is given, and what makes an intern convert to a return offer or referral.
Goal: secure an approved internship before work begins and enter it with a portfolio plan.
  • Confirm BEM 389 requirements early. Validate duties, supervisor, dates, hours, learning outcomes, and approval requirements before work begins.
  • Prepare portfolio categories before day one. Track deliverables, feedback, metrics, decisions, teamwork moments, and stakeholder communication examples.
  • Plan weekly reflection. Every Friday, write down the problem, your action, tool or framework used, result, and what story it supports for the senior search.

Weekly internship-search rhythm

  • 5-8 targeted applications to roles aligned with your primary or adjacent pathway.
  • 5-7 alumni/employer outreach messages tied to active or upcoming applications.
  • One resume or LinkedIn update using BEM coursework, concentration language, or leadership evidence.
  • One interview practice rep: behavioral, role motivation, or employer-specific answer.

BEM 389 readiness checklist

  • Minimum 200 hours over at least five weeks.
  • Approval, paperwork, and orientation before work begins.
  • Defined responsibilities and intended learning outcomes.
  • Status reports, final reflection, and portfolio artifacts.
Senior full-time job search. Your full-time search should not restart from zero. Use the internship, BEM concentration, leadership, ethics, simulation, strategy, and portfolio evidence to prove you are ready for a specific business role family.
Goal: start senior fall with a clear target, updated resume, and evidence bank.
  • Turn internship work into 3-5 strong bullets. Use problem, action, tool/framework, stakeholder, and result language.
  • Choose a primary and adjacent role family. Avoid applying randomly; use BEM job-title evidence and employer cards to focus while keeping one adjacent pathway open.
  • Update LinkedIn and portfolio. Add internship projects, BEM concentration, leadership, and target skills.
Goal: build enough high-quality pipeline before November.
  • Submit 6-10 targeted applications weekly. Tie each application to one role family and one evidence story.
  • Pair priority applications with relationships. Contact alumni or employer representatives before or shortly after applying.
  • Use BEM 318, BEM 365, BEM 388, and concentration work as interview evidence. Prepare stories on leadership, ethics, business judgment, and simulated decision-making.
Goal: diagnose the funnel and make targeted changes, not random changes.
  • If applications are not converting: revise target roles, resume evidence, keywords, and referral volume.
  • If interviews are not converting: practice internship impact stories, leadership stories, and role-specific motivation with a coach.
  • Expand strategically. Add adjacent titles, regional employers, alumni-led firms, growth companies, nonprofits, sports/media, or entrepreneurial organizations only where your story still fits.

Weekly full-time-search rhythm

  • 6-10 applications aligned with primary or adjacent pathway.
  • 6-8 networking touches with alumni, recruiters, and internship contacts.
  • Two interview practice stories: one internship-impact story and one leadership/team story.
  • Friday pipeline review: applications, contacts, interviews, rejections, follow-ups, and next actions.

Full-time search assets

  • One role-specific resume for each pathway you pursue.
  • LinkedIn profile naming BEM, concentration, internship evidence, leadership, and target skills.
  • Portfolio or story bank with internship deliverables, class projects, leadership examples, and quantified outcomes.
  • Clear answer to: why this role, why this employer, why now?
Did this create more questions than answers? That's okay! Meet with your Career Coach to talk through what you are learning, compare possible pathways, and choose the next step for your search.
Skill Builder
Use Skill Builder to convert an area of interest into visible evidence: coursework, concentration choices, projects, internship deliverables, leadership examples, LinkedIn Learning certificates, and interview stories. You can use this while you are still exploring, not only after you have chosen a pathway. Step 3 is available now, but its curriculum text customizes only after you complete Step 1 and Step 2.

Build the skills that make BEM evidence visible

Select a target role family, review the priority skills for that role, then connect each skill to curriculum, WFU resources, and employer-facing proof.

WFU LinkedIn Learning access for skill building: Use LinkedIn Learning through WFU to close gaps for your target role. Pair one course with one BEM project, internship deliverable, dashboard, client memo, market analysis, or leadership example so the skill becomes evidence you can use on your resume, LinkedIn profile, and in interviews.

Step 1 · Choose the role family you are targeting
Step 2 · Choose a priority skill to build evidence
If your priority skill is not one of the built-in choices: create your own skill-building plan. Upload syllabi, assignment descriptions, internship descriptions, club/project ideas, or job postings into an AI tool and ask it to identify where the skill can be practiced, documented, and translated into employer-facing evidence. Bring the AI-generated plan to your Career Coach so you can refine it into resume bullets, LinkedIn language, interview stories, and next actions.AI prompt to try: I am a BEM student. I want to build evidence for [skill] for [target role]. Review the syllabi, assignments, job postings, and resources I upload. Recommend course projects, campus activities, university resources, non-university resources, LinkedIn Learning topics, portfolio artifacts, and interview stories that would help me prove this skill.

      Evidence to show employers
Start by selecting a role family above.
How to use this: Do not try to list every skill. Pick the two or three skills that matter most for the roles you are exploring and build one concrete proof point for each: a class project, internship deliverable, portfolio artifact, leadership example, LinkedIn Learning completion, or employer-ready story.
Step 3 is available now. The curriculum map below shows default BEM guidance. To customize the text, choose a BEM role family in Step 1 and a priority skill in Step 2 first.
After both selections are made, this section updates with role-specific courses, academic actions, and employer-facing evidence.
Step 3 · Connect your BEM choices to the curriculum. This section is available as default guidance now. After Step 1 and Step 2 selections, it updates to show which BEM courses, concentrations, internship evidence, portfolio artifacts, and interview stories best support the selected career direction.
Step 3 · Curriculum → career: Leverage the Academic Program to Build Skills
This Step 3 curriculum map provides default BEM curriculum guidance and becomes personalized after Step 1 role-family and Step 2 priority-skill selections. Students enter the School of Business in sophomore spring, then use the BEM core, concentration, professional development series, required internship, leadership, ethics, and capstone work to create internship and full-time evidence.

Goal: use the transition into BEM to move from broad interest to a testable pathway hypothesis. You do not need to know your final career yet; you do need a primary and adjacent pathway to guide employer research.

        • Connect Organizational Behavior and early BEM work to leadership, teamwork, and professional presence stories.
        • Start a resume and LinkedIn profile that show liberal arts strengths plus emerging business skills.
        • Pick 2–3 pathways to test through informational interviews and employer events.

Goal: turn BEM coursework into role-specific evidence before internship applications and interviews. Employers should see a candidate who can already speak the language of business.

        • Translate quantitative analysis and finance into Excel, modeling, market, and decision examples.
        • Translate marketing and MIS into customer, channel, data, systems, and digital examples.

Goal: leave the internship with proof, not just experience. Your full-time search depends on being able to explain what you did, how you thought, what changed, and what you learned.

        • Define responsibilities, learning outcomes, and success measures with your supervisor.
        • Save non-confidential work samples and create weekly reflection notes.

Curated Skill Clusters on LinkedIn Learning

Turn a broad business education into a focused toolkit for analyst, consulting, project, operations, marketing, sales, and client-facing roles.

How these resources fit: Complement and reinforce skills developed through the academic program while building additional capabilities for specific job titles and functional roles.

        A focused approach

Do not try to complete everything.

Choose a target role, identify the most important gap, and complete the course that helps you create credible evidence for that role.

        1. Choose a roleUse the job-title and employer pages to select a realistic entry-level target.
        2. Build one skillComplete the most relevant course—not the largest number of courses.
        3. Create proofTurn the learning into a project, work sample, resume bullet, and interview story.
        Shared professional core

Three foundations for responsible, employer-ready work

Use these courses to strengthen responsible AI use, judgment, and communication across business functions.

        Shared core 01

Building AI Literacy and Fluency with Microsoft

Use AI productively while checking accuracy, protecting data, and preserving your own judgment.

Turn it into proof: Create a one-page AI use and verification checklist for a class or career project.
        Shared core 02

Critical Thinking for Better Judgment and Decision-Making

Employers expect you to frame ambiguous problems, test assumptions, and recommend a practical next step.

Turn it into proof: Write a short decision memo showing the evidence, alternatives, tradeoffs, and recommendation.
        Shared core 03

        Communicating with Confidence

Strong analysis only creates value when you can explain it clearly to a client, manager, or teammate.

Turn it into proof: Record a two-minute explanation of a project for a nontechnical audience.
        BEM technical collection

        Top technical and functional skills

Start with the cluster closest to your target role. Each cluster pairs two relevant courses with a work sample you can create.

        Technical cluster 01

        Solve business problems

Learn a repeatable way to define the problem, identify stakeholders, analyze needs, and recommend a workable solution.

Build this: Create a business case that defines the problem, stakeholders, alternatives, and recommended solution.
        Technical cluster 02

        Execute projects and priorities

Entry-level associates are often hired to coordinate work, clarify priorities, track deliverables, and help teams make progress.

Build this: Build a one-page project charter with scope, milestones, owners, risks, and measures of success.
        Technical cluster 03

        Understand customers and growth

These skills support marketing, account management, customer success, sales, product, and client-solutions pathways.

Build this: Develop a customer insight brief with one segment, one need, one measure, and one recommended action.
        Technical cluster 04

        Improve work across functions

BEM students enter varied functions where results depend on handoffs, shared priorities, and practical execution. These courses turn broad business knowledge into a visible ability to collaborate across teams, diagnose friction, and improve a workflow.

Build this: Map one cross-functional workflow, identify one handoff problem, and propose an improvement with owners and success measures.
        BEM power-skill collection

        Top power and durable skills

Pair technical depth with the human skills needed to clarify needs, collaborate, earn trust, and move work forward.

        Power skill 01

Read the room and build relationships

Broad business roles depend on customer awareness, self-management, and understanding concerns that are not stated directly.

Practice this: After a team or client conversation, document what you heard, what changed, and the follow-up you owe.
        Power skill 02

        Negotiate and lead across teams

Project, sales, operations, and client roles require alignment across people with different priorities.

Practice this: Build a stakeholder map and rehearse a tradeoff conversation with a clear ask and fallback.

The power-skill collection aligns with the NACE Career Readiness Competencies and the World Economic Forum Future of Jobs 2025 skills outlook.

        Optional depth

        Role-specific add-ons

Use these only after reviewing several postings for your target title and confirming that the skill appears repeatedly.

        Your BEM proof challenge

Choose a target function first. Complete two courses from the cluster closest to that function, then build one market, process, project, or customer artifact you can discuss in an interview.
